Instructables user dpearce1 made a solar-powered motorized trike, and an instruction set to go along with it. From the instructable:

The purpose of this project is to build a vehicle that:

-Provides free, 'green' transportation for short distances (<10 miles), thus it must never

plug into a wall socket, or emit any pollutants.

-Charge while at work

-Is cheap, simple, and low maintenance.

-Draws attention to the practical application of green energies, and promotes Fossil Fuel alternatives.

-Reduces excess automobile wear and pollution from cold driving / short, in town trips.

-Gets me an A, since it is a project for Dr Reza Toosi's 'Energy and the Environment, a global perspective' class at California State University, Long Beach. We look at the sources, technologies, and impacts of energy on our environment.

Chicago’s CCTV network to be autonomously monitored starting this summer

Posted on May 15th, 2008 in HiTechNews by admin

Chicago residents are no strangers to the city’s many CCTV cameras by this point — if anyone knows exactly how long to stop at Roosevelt and State to avoid the red-light cam there, you let us know, okay? — but it looks like this summer is going to bring a new twist to the city’s surveillance racket: automated camera monitoring. Video from the several thousand cameras in Chicago’s Operation Virtual Shield project currently comes into the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication’s ops center, but starting this summer, it’ll also be watched by an IBM-developed autonomous system that can be programmed to watch for specific activities or objects, like certain cars or unattended backpacks. Since the video is stored on a 60TB storage array for 30 days, law enforcement can also do retroactive searches using the tech. That’s a huge step up from San Francisco’s useless CCTV system, sure, but we’ve never really believed any of this stuff is actually effective at deterring crime — hopefully we’ll be proven wrong. Over Her Dead Body

The Movie :

Anytime that a loved one has passed, people have always turned to a medium or psychic to retrieve messages from their dearly departed.Even the Great Magician Harry Houdini promised his wife Bess, that if it was possible to contact the her after death he would contact her with a code. His wife tried to contact him after he died, unsuccessfully of course. In Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, Sam came back and spoke through Whoopi Goldberg who pretend to be clairvoyant and could speak to the dead.

There have been so many movies that Hollywood has made with the same theme but none as funny as Over Her Dead Body. Like the scene ‘Ghost’where Sam’s sings “I’m Henry the Eighth I am” repeatedly until he gets his way, this film has a lot of supernatural comedy. Its the ghostly antics similar to that making Over Her Dead Body entertaining to watch.

Youth Killed By a Helicopter While Getting His Mail Sparks Debate About Headphone Safety [No Joke]

Posted on May 15th, 2008 in Gadgets by admin

Seriously guys, you just can’t make this stuff up. A 23 year old Canadian college student was killed when a crashing helicopter struck and dragged him as he was walking to his mailbox. Apparently eyewitnesses noticed that the youth was completely unaware of his impending doom and a friend told reporters that he often listened to music through earbuds underneath the hood of his sweatshirt. Naturally, reaction was swift. If he had not been listening to music perhaps he could have nimbly sidestepped the helicopter and gone about his business as if nothing had happened. After all, this sort of crap happens everyday right?

While I completely agree that listening to music too loudly can inhibit your ability to recognize and react to a potentially dangerous situation around you, I can’t help but find it completely baffling that this story sparked a debate about the dangers of headphone use while completely glossing over the fact that this dude was hit by a HELICOPTER. In fact, no concrete evidence was given that he was even wearing headphones at the time. At any rate, this fiasco has really struck a chord with me. From this day forward I will not wear headphones while traveling on foot just in case a meteor, satellite, or charging rhino should be barreling towards me. [Globe and Mail via Headphone Info]

The Rat Pack Ultimate Collectors Edition

The Movies:

Made up of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford, The Rat Pack were the coolest group of actors/musicians to come out of the American entertainment scene of the era. Though they made plenty of films individually, the four in this set represent the best of their collaborative efforts and it’s a fitting gesture that this material is being released and/or re-released in honor of the tenth anniversary of Sinatra’s passing. First things first, however - there aren’t any major differences between the three Warner Brothers titles in this boxed set to their 2002 releases. Sergeant’s 3 is here on DVD for the first time but Fox/MGM have made that DVD available separately meaning owners of the original releases don’t need to splurge for this set simply to get one film. With that out of the way, on with the show!
